Venue Type & Location

Multi-use

Site Name: Unknown site
Location: Bristol
County: Bristol (city-county) in Gloucestershire
Location Type: Town - multiple sites at uncertain locations

Overview

  • Address: Unknown. Called “badly situated” in a letter printed in the Bristol Mercury in 1850 (transcribed in Kathleen Barker Collection).

  • Performance Space Description: Little information about this venue has been found. Advertisements from 1850, however, do note that an exhibition of Bosjesmen had to be relocated (to the Circus) due to the poor view from the rear seats at this venue.

  • Typical Fare: Between 1842 and 1852, this venue was used for a variety of purposes. It seems to have been hired out for a range of local meetings, for instance, and also hosted everything from Oratorios and Scientific Lectures to Magic Shows and Exhibitions of ‘exotic’ peoples.
