Overview

  • Address: North side of Lord Nelson Street, Liverpool. For a current map,

  • Alternate Names: Nelson Street Assembly Rooms (pre-1845), The Hall of Melody, The Hall of Science.

  • Capacity: Broadbent claims that the hall was "a spacious building" that "had a seating capacity of 2,700 persons" (336).

  • Performance Space Description: Playbills for entertainments at the Concert Hall in the mid-1840s describe the venue as “the most commodious and elegant Room in the town”. They also note spectator seating in a side gallery and in the body of the room. Reserved seats were also available, but their specific location is unknown. A later description (from 1907) claims that the venue’s motto (“to make the man a better mechanic, and the mechanic a better man”) was prominently displayed on a scenic backdrop during the mid-19th Century ("The Late Thos. Callow"). Further research into the performance space itself is still required.

  • Typical Fare: During the years covered by this database, the Concert Hall was home to a popular ‘Saturday Evening Concerts’ series, hosted and overseen by the Northern Mechanics Institution. A wide variety of vocalists and musicians appeared as part of this series. Other entertainments included lectures and readings. Contemporary playbills also note that the Concert Hall could be “let for Public Meetings, Concerts, Lectures, Tea Parties, Dinners, &c.”

  • Performance History

  • The Concert Hall was built in the 19th Century. According to an article in The Manx Quarterly, construction was backed primarily by Nathaniel Caine, “father of the late Mr. W.S. Caine, M.P.” ("The Late Thos. Callow")

  • The building has now been transformed into apartments.

  • For a thorough history of the building see Broadbent. Annals of the Liverpool Stage.
